Fernandina Beach Police Department ‘Spotlight’ – Barb Rathmell

‘Fernandina Beach Police Department
May 9, 2022

Editor’s Note:  I have always wanted to post an article to acknowledge Barb Rathmell’s service to our community.  Many of you have seen Barb removing litter from our beaches.  Just imagine the number of plastic bottles and bags, cigarette butts, and various other items left by people who never thought to use the trash cans only a short distance away.   Barb is normally publicity-shy, so it was a delight to see she was ‘Spotlighted.’ Now I can let Barb know, that many in our community are grateful for your efforts to keep our beaches clean.  Thank you, Barb!

Police Services Manager Barb Rathmell

This week’s employee spotlight is on Police Services Manager Barb Rathmell. Barb has been with the City for 17 years, working a majority of that time in the Finance Department and she came to the FBPD about a year ago. Barb is the administrative assistant to the FBPD staff, she keeps training records, processes invoices, keeps track of payroll, and about a dozen other behind the scenes things that help keep the FBPD running.

Getting to know Barb.

Do you have any hobbies? I am passionate about keeping our beaches clean. I spend much of my free time walking the beach picking up trash and items that could be harmful to our ocean or ocean life. I love being on the beach and this gives me an opportunity to make a difference while enjoying what I love.

Do you have a favorite food? Well, I should say salad or veggies, but I really enjoy a good pizza or steak. I haven’t tried a pizza covered with steak pieces yet, but it’s on my list.

Where were you born? I was born and raised in Greenport, Long Island, New York. I set off to see the world by joining the Navy and after my tour, I opted to make Florida my home and eventually settled in Fernandina Beach. I love it here and this is my home now.

Do you have a dream vacation? I live my dream vacation; I live at the beach! But I also enjoy visiting other beaches, especially those on Florida’s west coast.

Are you and Android or iPhone person? I like my Android phone, to me it is easier to use than the iPhone.
