The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office wants to thank everyone in the community who sent us name suggestions for our newest bloodhound puppy, whether it was on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, phone or by mail. We received over a thousand submissions and we loved reading so many creative name ideas. However, we left it up to our K9 handlers to decide which name they liked best out of all the suggestions. The name chosen is Ol’ Red. Ol’ Red was suggested by Cheri Jones-Arp, in memory of Deputy Josh Moyers.

Deputy Moyers was shot and killed in September and he was known for his beautiful red hair so it seemed fitting. Sheriff Leeper spoke to Deputy Moyers parents and fiancé for approval. They were grateful to see so many name submissions in honor of their beloved Josh. We here at NCSO miss Josh every day and it only seemed right to name this red haired hound after him. Ol’ Red was gifted to us from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. We will keep you updated on his growth and training!
