Metanoia Retreat for Writers, April 22-24, 2022

Media Release
January 7, 2022

Metanoia is defined as the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self or way of life. Is this not what the world is currently experiencing, a Metanoia?

The Metanoia Retreat will take place on Amelia Island on Earth Day weekend April 22-24, 2022. Participants will find community, awareness about the Right Whales, the ocean, amazing cuisine, laughter, and inspiration for their writing, culminating with a final public performance at Story & Song bookstore.

The Metanoia Retreat had a booth at the Right Whale Festival, November 7. We extended our reach there while festival-goers visited our booth to write haikus for the whales, to foster their moral imaginations.

We have been collecting metanoia shells, shells that have a naturally occurring, water-eroded, holes in them.  These “holey” shells have been used for centuries to protect boats from stormy seas, and fishermen from evil spirits affecting their catch. The shells we collect from the Right Whale Festival attendees will be used to create a mixed-media sculpture to help people visualize  not only the plight of the Right Whale, but what the retreat is all about. We will unveil a sketch of the sculpture, by the artist Sydney Zalewski, which will suggest the decreasing number of Right Whales.
