Tensions were high following a video with two white kids using racial slurs and a white hood was sent to a group of black students at Yulee High School.  According to News4Jax,  “The Nassau County School district confirmed with News4Jax that the video sparked a fight when a few students,” some on the football team, when students confronted the teen who sent the video.” Parents said they were defending themselves after being bullied and targeted because of their race.”

Response from Nassau County Assistant Superintendent Mark Durham

“The district was made aware of a video that was recorded this summer but just recently sent on Snap Chat to several Yulee High School students. The video contained racial slurs and images. It resulted in a physical altercation involving several students. Disciplinary actions consistent with the district’s code of conduct have been given to students involved in the altercation and in sending the Snap Chat video.”

How are the two students who made & sent the video being disciplined? The hate in this area is so profound it erases the natural beauty around us. We, the adults need to do better. We need to come together instead of fighting over our differences whether it be color, religion, or political beliefs. This is so sad and disturbing.

I don’t like to circulate rumors, but maybe somebody can confirm this: the white kids wearing hoods quite reminiscent of the KKK we’re saying very racist remarks. Some Black kids on the football team saw it and confronted one of the white kids. There was an altercation they got physical, and it was the Black kids that got disciplined. No white kids were disciplined, even the young Klan wannabes. Is this true?

It is only when white people speak out against racist remarks and behaviors that things will change. It is not a Black, Indigenous, or POC problem; it is a white person’s problem. I have read many blatantly racist remarks in our local paper and here in the FO, that the editors do not even notice or refuse to respond to. Many people do not realize they are being racist, but then that is why we need to educate them. Most consider themselves good people who want equality for everyone, but racism is so ingrained in white people’s culture, they do not realize they are doing it.
