When I turned 65, I talked with one of County Extension Medicare experts, and she was awesome. Not only was she super-knowledgeable about Medicare, but she could explain it clearly, comprehensively, and tailored it to my situation. Plus, she lived locally, and so knew all about the plans and providers here.

I don’t understand this “open enrollment” period. According to the Medicare information they sent me I can only enroll starting 3 months prior to my 65th birthday up to 3 months after. If that time period does not coincide with the time frame of Oct. 15-Dec 7th, then what?

The Open Enrollment period applies to folks who are already on Medicare and want to change plans. The 3 month before and after 65 is for new enrollees.
