The Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting on June 7, 2021.
Deemed “special” because the regular meeting of the BOCC occurs on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6:00 pm and on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:00 am. All meetings take place at the James S. Page Governmental Complex at 96135 Nassau Place in Yulee – right off SR 200.
The meeting was scheduled to “consider a resolution extending the State of Emergency in Nassau County — (due to COVID-19) from June 7 until June 14, 2021.”
Such a resolution (i.e., relating to a “State of Emergency”) must be passed every seven days. As a result, special sessions of the BOCC have been ongoing since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
When asked about why the County continues to hold such special meetings relating to the “State of Emergency,” Taco Pope, County Manager explained that “once we let the LSE [Local State of Emergency} expire, we lose the ability to seek reimbursement (federal) for certain expenditures.”
Mr. Pope went on to explain that “on April 27th the Governor extended the State of Emergency for 60 days . . . [and] out of the 67 counties, only 17 counties are not still under an LSE.”
County Commission items is a long-standing item on standard BOCC agenda. It comes right after County Manager’s Business and County Attorney’s Business. County Attorney Michael Mullin was not present at the meeting.
On this night, of particular interest to many Nassau County residents may be comments made by Commissioner Klynt Farmer. (Farmer represents District Five which includes Yulee and Callahan). Farmer made mention of the County’s libraries now being up, open and operational and encouraged interested individuals to check out NassauReads.com as a good resource.
Commissioner Farmer went on to encourage Nassau County residents to “Make A Kit” – relating to hurricane season. Such a kit should include to include batteries, flashlights, candles and canned foods, among other items, and went on to say, “the season is upon us . . . don’t wait until the last minute.”
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting another above-normal Atlantic hurricane season. Forecasters predict a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. However, experts do not anticipate the historic level of storm activity seen in 2020.”

Just want to correct what is probably a typo. The BOCC does not meet regularly on the 1st Monday of the month. Regular meetings are on the 2nd & 4th Mondays evenings each month and as you correctly reported the 3rd Wednesday morning of each month.
