Fernandina Beach, FL March 23, 2021 – The Unopened Letter is a coming-of-age story set in the mid-1960s. A period in U.S. history when tensions registered in the “red” zone for 27 million young men. Why? Because if you were between the ages of 18 and 25 and had followed the law to register with the Selective Service System, you were fair game to be drafted. You’d most likely be sent to Southeast Asia to fight in a hugely controversial war. Unlike during previous actions, military service members now not only risked their lives but often found themselves cold-shouldered by their fellow Americans.
This book is a very personal account of a young man who, when he received his letter, decided not to open it, thus shaping his destiny while remaining committed to serving his country—aboard a U.S. Navy ship. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cry, and leave you filled with hope.
The author held a book launch on March 28, at the St. Mary, George Submarine museum.

Rabia Tanveer, Readers’ Favorites – five stars – Commander R.W. Herman (USN-Ret.) was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While attending the University of Minnesota in 1965, he received his draft notice and chose to enter the United States Navy for four years, three of which were spent on the USS Cambria (APA-36). Two years after his return, he reentered the service and continued a career spanning more than thirty years. Following ten years of enlisted service, he was commissioned through the Limited Duty Officer Program. He was the senior submarine communications officer in the Navy at retirement, having led the silent service into the twenty first century maintaining connectivity superiority. His last post was at Kings Bay, and he and his wife, Kathy, now reside in Fernandina Beach.
