Boulonge, Florida. Dayspring Village is a state licensed limited mental health assisted living facility that is designed to served adults who struggle with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders. Florida has seen a loss of state licensed facilities for adults with mental illness during the pandemic, last year there were 347 state licensed facilities, this year there are only 250 state licensed facilities remaining providing care to 3618 Floridians.

It is estimated by Social Security Administration there are 55,000 Adults with Schizophrenia residing in Florida and as the pandemic continues to rise, the number of these adults who have lost their housing and now have become homeless has increased. The average life expectancy in the United States for an adult with Schizophrenia is between 58 to 64 yrs old, often lack of access to care leads to chronic illnesses.

“The holidays are particular difficult times for many who struggle with mental illness as it often reminds them of times of crisis, depression and increased periods of anxiety. What we know is that people remember what happened on the holidays and making an impact at the holiday can have a huge impact on changing the narrative” said Douglas Adkins, Executive Director

“The Dayspring Village SECRET SANTA PROGRAM is a critical link with the community. It is a easy way to help change the course of illness, by simply adopting a resident’s needs for Christmas. The excitement associated with a wrapped gift on Christmas Day is unlike any other experience, for some of our residents it is the first time for them to witness this act of love and joy, it remains with them throughout the year and serves as a reminder that they are not forgotten, that someone cares and they are not alone.” Said Adkins

“ It is estimated that suicide among adults with Schizophrenia is close to 25% will attempt to end their lives during the course of illness and 10% will be successful. The impact of the lock downs, the fear of the Coronavirus and the long wait for the vaccine have taken their toll this year. We have remained COVID19 free because we have worked to reduce the pathway of infection.” Said Adkins
