Nassau County Commissioner-elect John Martin

Nassau County Commissioner-elect John Martin from District 1, appeared at the September 14, 2020 meeting of the BOCC to protest the selection of a new chairman and vice chairman stating that he did not believe outgoing commissioners should be responsible for putting into place the leadership team that will govern the Board after newly elected commissioners are officially sworn in.

As explained in background documents, a new Chairman and Vice Chairman are appointed annually to begin their role with the new calendar year. However, the current Chairman, Daniel B. Leeper, will be leaving office in November 2020. Therefore, a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman will need to be appointed for the remainder of 2020 through December 31, 2021.

Martin made the case and the sitting board agreed that Commissioner Ford will serve as interim Chair through the end of the year, with Commissioner Bell serving as interim Vice-Chair.
