Stan Bethea is a true native son of Nassau County with family roots reaching back almost 200 years. Raised and educated in Callahan, he still lives there. The son of Billy and Thelma (Geiger) Bethea, he married the former Nancy Lee Smith of Jacksonville. The couple has one daughter. Stan holds a B.S. degree from UNF in Computer and Information Systems.
In 2005, Stan transitioned to the Duval County Supervisor of Elections office from previous staff positions he held with JEA and the City of Jacksonville. The following year, he was promoted to Director of Information Services, a position he still holds.
Currently, Stan serves over 630,000 voters in Duval County, the seventh largest county in Florida, as Chief Elections Officer.
Stan has worked alongside former Duval County Supervisor of Elections, Jerry Holland, and current Duval County Supervisor of Elections, Mike Hogan, to deliver 43 successful elections, four of which were gubernatorial, and three of which were presidential.
Stan and his staff are now adding the current 2020 Presidential Election to that list.
In 2018, Stan earned his state election certification, the Master Florida Certified Election Professional (MFCEP) credential, awarded by the Florida Supervisors of Elections Association. In 2019, Stan achieved his national election certification, becoming a Certified Election/Registration Administrator (CERA), through the National Association of Election Officials.
“The elections process has changed over the last 15 years,” Stan said. “The whole thing is computerized now, from the voter registration system to ballot layout and vote counting,” Stan said.
“I have created ballots, mailed ballots, processed ballots, tabulated ballots, set up Early Voting sites, configured tabulators, and sat across a window from the news media on Election Night as I tabulated results, and more,” he added. “I would love the opportunity to bring my skills and expertise home to serve my neighbors, the voters of Nassau County.
“Running elections isn’t something you learn overnight. I have been in this industry 14 years, and I am still learning. From the statutes and rules to best practices and security, there is always something to learn,” Stan said.
Stan is an election professional who looks forward to bringing his education, certification, and experience to serve Nassau County’s voters as the next Supervisor of Elections.
Editor’s Note: Stan Bethea will face Janet H Adkins and Justin Taylor in the August 18 election. This election will be decided in August and is opened to all registered voters.
