John Martin
Candidate BOCC, District 1
June 18, 2020

Candidate John Martin

Mr. Martin served 21 years in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force and retired as a Senior Chief in 2002. In 2005 Clerk of Court, John Crawford, hired Martin to be Nassau County’s first full-time Veterans’ Service Officer. For the next 13 years, Martin assisted thousands of Nassau County veterans and their dependents navigate the complicated VA System to apply for and obtain VA Disability, Pension, Health Care and a variety of other benefits they so rightly deserved.

Martin graduated from the University of North Florida, with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) double majoring in Logistics and Management and earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Economics.

Martin has lived in Nassau County for 27 years with his wife, Donna, who is the Executive Director of the Florida State College at Jacksonville, Nassau Center. They have one daughter, Janel, who is a graduate of Fernandina Beach High School, and is currently employed as a teacher there. They have four grandchildren, three of which attend Nassau County Schools and the fourth is 4 years old.

Martin’s current community service includes: Nassau County Veterans Treatment Court Mentor Coordinator, Veterans Council of Nassau County, Northeast Florida Regional Council Board of Directors, Nassau County Republican Executive Committee, and Nassau County Republican Party State Committeeman. He has also previously served on the Nassau County Code Enforcement Board and the Council on Aging Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board.

“As a Fiscal Conservative, I believe that the citizens of Nassau County already pay enough in Property Taxes. We have heard over the past few years that growth must pay for itself. It’s a catchy slogan that means nothing unless it is followed by a budget that does not increase the tax burden on existing taxpayers.” Martin said.

Martin believes “The County Manager and County Attorney positions should never have been merged under one person. Doing so eliminates checks and balances and creates an environment where one person has too much power.”

“Regardless of whether you are pro-Rayonier or anti-Rayonier, the dispute between Nassau County and Rayonier / Radient should have never gotten to this point. Now a Judge will decide the outcome and the only people that win are the lawyers.” Martin said.

John Martin has served our Nation, the Veterans’ Community of Nassau County, numerous civic and fraternal organizations and is now ready to serve as your next Nassau County Commissioner for District 1 and humbly asks for your vote on August 18th.
