Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County are honored to announce they have been awarded a $46,000 grant from the Women’s Giving Alliance (WGA), to support the SMART Girls initiative in both of their Clubs for the next two years. The WGA funds, educates, and advocates for women and girls to strengthen our families, communities and future. This award is part of almost $600,000 that the WGA had in its award pool this cycle and represents their efforts to break the cycle of female poverty.

In Florida, 40 percent of families with children living in poverty are female-headed households. And children who grow up in the bottom fifth of national family income are more likely to remain in poverty as adults. WGA’s strategy is to educate its members, partners and the community at large about effective solutions to existing barriers, advocate for change and make grants to non-profit partners for intervention programs for women and girls.

SMART Girls is a high-impact empowerment and prevention program which pairs the tested, proven “Skills, Mastery and Resistance Training” curriculum, with gender and age specific information to assist young women in developing the necessary skills to lead long, healthy and prosperous lives. It is a comprehensive health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program, designed to offer a safe environment where girls, ages 10 to 18, can candidly express feelings about their mind, body and community. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

SMART Girls is just one of the opportunities our Club members have to learn, discover their needs, set goals, grow, give back to the community and meet new friends. Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau seek to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
