Nassau County beaches remain closed

In an early morning email, County Attorney/County Manager Mike Mullin, when asked about the opening of beaches in Jacksonville, noted, “A regional approach was preferred and was working but Georgia and Duval, without consulting regional partners have decided on a different direction.” I

A special meeting was called for 10 am this morning at which time the Board of County Commissioners decided to “err on the side of caution,” a phrase used by Commissioner Danny Leeper to keep the beaches closed through the weekend and to monitor what happens at the Jacksonville beaches.   The issue will be readdressed by the Nassau Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on Monday.

Staff will consult with its partners in an attempt to develop a very reasoned and reasonable plan.

As Mullin stated “There are medical issues still out there, there are enforcement issues . . . “

The City of Fernandina Beach is to address this issue at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday evening.

St. Johns and Flagler counties are also in discussions about re-opening their beaches.

Please don’t just give this 3 days to see how it works. We all knew Florida was going to be the guinea pig here with DeSantis following anything Trump says. That doesn’t make it logically or scientifically correct!! Please give it three weeks to see if the illness numbers start going up. Do you want to start this mess all over again? You know people will pack our beaches and pack our little town, our 3 grocery stores. PLEASE 3 more weeks to see if they are wrong! I love and miss the beach, I went almost every day but I like living.

We can understand waiting and learning what happens in Jax and elsewhere. What complicates Fernandina Beach is all the cars that come on the beach. Last time the beach was opened Peters Point, Scott Road and American Beach were wall to wall trucks. The beach was being churned up and non-vehicle beach goers could hardly find a place to set-up. Furthermore, social distancing was not happening. What controls will there be for the amount of vehicles that these beaches can support; as well as the social distancing?

We have now seen what happened in Duval Country when beaches were reopened. Commissioners, please keep us safe – keep our beaches closed!

Closing the beaches has been a ridiculous idea from the beginning. What’s the difference in closing the beaches and keeping the Greenway open? Even in the summer, few people who are walking on the beach are in close proximity. This is an excellent place for our citizens to get some exercise and fresh air.

No worries folks as you have a bunch of sheep for “leaders” vs. people who can make decissions. Main beach (few hundred feet to park) Peters Point( ok a few hundred feet) and Burney Park(?) Damm those cars on the beach….I could not even find a place to sit down. There are 36+/- other beach walkovers that no cars are allowed on. Walk the beach?,ride a bike on the beach? HEAVENS NO! Keep us safe!!!!! Please!!!!! So please tell me what is different walking on the Greenway?, walking any section of the shore to river Bike Path (loaded with people waling all over the path with dogs 6 ft away on leashes or three plus people shouler to shoulder), walking on 14th street, walking on 8th street, walking on Centre street? Really? NOTHING. January~~February “no masks necessary” ……March maybe…….., April Masks are mandatory! “social distancing of 6 feet? Next month(alreay mention of 8ft) 10 feet then? And the Band played on.

The only person who will keep you safe is yourself. The next person who as I pass on the bike path who yells “signal” I will stop and relieve them of their ear pods. They could not even hear their own heart beat if they tried and yes I did ring a bell THREE times but they as most were too busy listening to yet more palbum for the masses. Sad reason, thought and common sense have gone out the window for “we want to keep you safe”(the TSA public announcment muzak announcment that was playing in all major US airports right before BC-1 came(Before Corona) and you ask “how could have Hitler gone and done that to the German people”?????. Keep their bellies full and their minds will follow. Sad. Don’t see this coming? I have a wonderful Fairy Tale for you to read.
