The maintenance and rehabilitation of historic structures can be a daunting and costly proposition for homeowners. The City of Fernandina Beach recognizes the importance of the structures that contribute to the City’s historic character, and ultimately the “sense of place” that Fernandina Beach is famous for.

To assist property owners in maintaining and rehabilitating these structures, the City has created a pilot program for the Preservation Rehabilitation Assistance Grant (PRAG). This pilot program will test the effectiveness for this type of grant in assisting residential property owners, as well as gauge the demand for this type of program. If the pilot program is successful, the program could be expanded in the future to include commercial contributing structures. This program seeks to promote reinvestment in Fernandina Beach’s historic resources and assist residential property owners in completing sensitive rehabilitations and necessary maintenance.

The Preservation Rehabilitation Assistance Grant (PRAG) makes monies available to private property owners to complete exterior stabilization and repair work on historic homes that continue to serve a residential purpose. The program will provide loan funding in the form of 0% interest loans of up to $5,000.00 for a period of up to five years and allows for loan forgiveness.

All work performed must be exterior work, which results in repair, improvement, reconstruction, maintenance or stabilization.

Eligible exterior work may include:

Exterior wall repairs
Cornices and parapet repairs
Roof repairs
Weatherization improvements
Window/ door restoration
Foundation repairs
Repainting Masonry/stucco repairs
Structural /Reinforcement Porch and step repairs

Excellent news! That Fernandina values the history of place says much about her people.
