Play ball! An opinion

One of the best “small town” Fernandina organizations is the Elm Street Little League. Watching a softball game at the Charles Albert Field on Elm Street is like going back in time.

It’s one of the things I like best about my adopted home town.

Night games, with the moths circling the sodium lights. The cooking smells coming from the concession stand (best wings in town!). The stands filled with anxious parents and grandparents. All watching their daughters play ball.

It’s an iconic American event. It happens at ball fields all over the U.S. And I’d put Elm Street up against any of them, for the experience.

My daughter began playing when she was 8 years old. I’ve spent the last four years as a volunteer and board member. There are few things that are as important as supporting the development of the young women in our community. Softball provides health and social-emotional benefits from the team experience. It develops leadership and empathy.

I can’t overstate the value of softball and the positive impact on the kids. You can see them grow during the season. It’s tremendous. It’s a great group and we are excited about the spring season.

We are excited to grow the league this year.

If your daughter is between the ages of 7 and 16, she can play. The Elm Street Little League’s Fernandina Divas softball signup for spring is going on right now. Click here to register or for more information. Scholarships are available. Any skill level is accepted.

Playing softball gave my daughter a huge confidence boost. I watched her grow through the team’s highs and lows. I highly recommend Elm Street Little League’s softball program to any young women interested. I hope to see you at the games.
