The Nassau Community Band Fall concert is this Thursday, November 7 at 7:00 PM at the St. Michael Parish Hall. The musicians will be performing works that are the cornerstone of the wind band repertoire, Broadway medleys, and swinging big band selections.

The English Folk Song Suite was composed by Ralph Vaughn-Williams (1872-1958) in 1923, with first performances in 1924. The suite is his most popular work. Williams uses the ensemble to bring out the interesting melodies and rhythms of several folk songs from an area of England called Somerset. Later the work was orchestrated for orchestra. This is ne of the few times a composition was written for band before the orchestral version!

I am a firm believer that ALL band concerts have at least one great march. The Fall concert is no exception. America Exultant by Henry Fillmore is that march. Listen for the patriotic song “America” in the second half of the march! Fillmore is also famous for Lassus Trombone.

Another march on the program is the popular British Eighth by Zo Elliot. Elliot is an American who was famous for writing British style music. His march comes in at number three on the top forty march parade!

Selections from Mary Poppins and the Golden Age of Broadway represent American musicals and movies. The music of Rodgers and Hammerstein are well known to audiences around the world. Many generations have grown up to Mary Poppins tunes such as A Spoonful of Sugar and Chim Chim Cher-ee.

The concert will also feature patriotic favorites Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa, and the Carmen Dragon arrangement of America the Beautiful.

Americans have loved jazz since the advent of the swing area in 1935. The Big Band Cavalcade features songs by Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Glen Miller and Woody Herman. Dancing is encouraged.

Speaking of dancing, the NCB will perform a medley of Mambo Tunes. Get your Mambo going with Mambo #5, Ran Kan Kan, Sway, and Mambo Jambo! More dancing is encouraged!

Make every effort to attend the NCB Fall Concert!
