Wild Amelia will present “Sharks of the First Coast,” the second of the monthly nature forum series, on Tuesday, October 8th. The program will be offered at 7 p.m. at the Peck Center Auditorium, 516 S. 10th Street in Fernandina, and the guest speaker will be University of North Florida Associate Professor and shark expert, Dr. James Gelschleichter.

Dr. Gelschleichter has conducted shark research for more than twenty years; he is the current Director of the UNF Coastal and Marine Biology Program; he received his Ph.D. in Marine Science from the College of William and Mary. He worked for a decade as a research scientist and program director at the Mote Marine Laboratory’s Center for Shark Research. Since 2008, with the UNF Shark Biology Program, he has focused on the biology and ecology of sharks and rays, with special emphasis on the shark population off northeast Florida and southeast Georgia coasts. His research has three facets: the ecology of shark populations, reproductive biology and physiology of sharks, and the effects of pollution on sharks and other fish.

“Shark Week” may be over on television, but the topic is alive and timely for Wild Amelia. The program is free and open the public, so bring your questions about this fascinating apex predator to the program.
