The winners of the 11th annual Wild Amelia Nature Photography Contest were announced at the Wild Amelia Nature Festival Expo on Saturday, May 18, at the Atlantic Recreation Center in Fernandina Beach. The contest accepts entries from adults and children and from beginner as well as advanced photographers on themes of birds, other animals, flowers, and landscapes. There is also a Best in Show winner.

“Milkweed” by Jim Ekstrom won Best in Show.
“Butterfly Sunflower” by Lisa Patria won Advanced Flora.
“Rays of Light” by Yvonne Randolph won Advanced Landscape.

This year, that grand prize /best in show winner was “Milkweed” by Jim Ekstrom.

The adult winners were Erica Dodge for “Woodpecker in Bath” (Beginner/Birds); Joe Jones for “Peregrine with Prey”
(Advanced/Birds); Barry Hertslet for “Alligator in Clouds”(Beginner/Other Animals); Diane Howell for “Gulf Fritillary” (Advanced/Other Animals);
Lisa Mallo for “Flower” (Beginner/Flowers); Lisa Patria for “Butterfly Sunflower” (Advanced/Flowers); Gaye Pappas for “Sunrise in Dunes”
(Beginner/Landscape); and Yvonne Randolph for “Rays of Light”(Advanced/Landscape).

In the children’s contest, winners under 10 were Laney Fine for “Resting by the Water”
(First Place); River Plungis for “Flower” and “Bird” (Second and Third Place). The winners for children ages 10-17 were
McKenna Hiebel for “Driftwood” (First Place); Kate Badiall for “Jellyfish at Sunset” (Second Place); and Landon Plungis for “Orange Flower” (Third Place). Honorable Mentions were awarded to Julia Winston for “Hungry Baby Tern”; Amanda Badiall for “Sunset at Fort Clinch”; and Adam Powell for “Driftwood Trees, Little Talbot.”

These winning photos will be exhibited at the Fort Clinch Visitor Center for the coming year. The opening of this exhibit will be held on Friday evening, July 12, from 6:30-8:30 pm; the public is invited to attend, and admission to Fort Clinch will be waived for guests, who will also be treated to a bluegrass concert by the Amelia River Ramblers on the patio.
