Providing patients an extra layer of care and safety

Critically ill patients at Baptist Medical Center Nassau now have an added level of care and safety with a new tele-monitoring system the hospital recently installed. The technology provides 24-hour physician oversight of patients in addition to the bedside care provided by the Baptist Nassau medical team.

Tele-monitoring, or telemedicine as it is sometimes called, allows physicians to monitor patients’ medical conditions from afar. Baptist Nassau’s new system, provided by Advanced ICU care, uses real-time clinical data and a two-way audiovisual system to remotely monitor and engage in patient care on a 24/7 basis. The technology continually tracks patients’ vital signs, medications, lab results and clinical status. The system can help identify issues before they become serious, prompting immediate intervention when necessary.

Studies show that this approach significantly improves patient outcomes and safety in critical care units. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), tele-ICU programs are associated with reduced length of hospital stays and lower rates of preventable complications.

The Baptist Nassau team is “cutting the ribbon” as the new service goes live for the very first time.

“This is part of our commitment to continually innovate and improve safety and quality for our patients,” said Hospital President Ed Hubel. “By adding around-the-clock tele-monitoring to the quality care already provided by our team, our patients will receive the highest level of medical care available today.”

Periodically, patients in the Critical Care Unit will hear a doorbell chime, signaling that at critical care provider or clinician will soon appear on the video monitor screen. This is a two-way system that allows patients and their families to discuss their care with the physician at Advanced ICU Care.

Baptist Nassau is rated an “A” in patient safety and is the first Baptist Health hospital to launch tele-ICU with Advanced ICU Care. In exploring the advantages of tele-ICU, the hospital recognized the many benefits this additional layer of care and support will bring to patients, providers and families in Nassau County.

“Advanced ICU Care is pleased to welcome Baptist Medical Center Nassau and Baptist Health into our growing network of tele-ICU partners,” said Lou Silverman, CEO of Advanced ICU Care. “We continue our work with a range of hospitals and health systems to ensure outstanding care services that keep their patients within their home community and we look forward to assisting Baptist Medical Center Nassau in realizing this goal.”
