“The Pillowman” opens January 12 at Amelia Community Theatre’s Studio 209.

Amelia Community Theatre opens the intense, dark comedy The Pillowman on January 12 in its Studio 209 theater at 209 Cedar Street. This unsettling tale of a short story writer being interrogated by the police for crimes against children is written by Martin McDonagh, who wrote Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, recently chosen as Best Drama at the 2018 Golden Globes Awards. The character Katurian, a seldom published writer, discovers that real life crimes are mirroring his bizarre fairy tales.

On one level, The Pillowman is a bold, fascinating study of imagination and art, with a look at the repercussions that may befall the artist, and questioning the responsibilities of the artist to society. On another level, it is a scary tale with twists and turns, disturbing and compelling at the same time. ACT suggests an R-rating for this show, due to content and adult language.

Performances are at 8 p.m. on January 12-13, 18-20, and at 2 p.m. on January 14. Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for students through college, and available at www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org or by calling 904-261-6749.
