Amelia Island’s Genealogical Society (AIGS) used the occasion of Saturday’s Bosque Bello Cemetery Tour to dedicate a kiosk to the late Hal Belcher. Belcher was a well know local historian who surveyed the old section of Bosque Bello Cemetery and later assisted the AIGS with its survey of the newer section.
Belcher was a true friend to the local history community. He played a key role in transferring the Amelia Island Lighthouse from the General Services Administration to the City of Fernandina Beach, he helped obtained the National Register of Historic Places designation for Fernandina’s historic downtown, and he was recognized by the Friends of Fort Clinch for his dedication and service.
A QR code is available for scanning. This will allow visitors to locate grave sites and obtain other information through the AIGS’s website. In addition to grave site location, there is a wealth of information available by clicking here and entering your family name.
Thanks to the Amelia Island’s Genealogical Society for honoring our dad and thanks to the Susan Steger and the Fernandina Observer for getting the word out!
Mr. Belcher’s work was instrumental in our research for Bosque Bello as part of the City’s cemetery master plan. He truly leaves an important legacy!
