A good time was had by all as community leaders of all ages, including Mayor Robin Lentz and Thomas Morris, join together on Saturday to dedicate a “Little Free Library.”

The Fernandina Beach Housing Authority Board isn’t just about housing: it’s now about books!  An idea to join the nationwide movement of “Little Free Libraries” and locate  a lending library on the Housing Authority property began at a board meeting and from there, the idea took off.  With funding from the City of Fernandina Beach, help from Boy Scout Troop 583, and some nice carpentry work from the  Amish, a “Little Free Library” has come to Fernandina.  It is registered with the nation wide organization and its location, next to the Housing Authority office near South 14th & Hickory Streets, will soon appear on a the “Little Free Library” map.

According to Housing Authority Chair Thomas Morris, “61% of the children in low income homes do not have books in the house or access to books. The whole idea is to get the books in their hands.”  Morris hopes to expand “Little Free Libraries” to other areas in the community.

Although the idea for the project originated from the Housing Authority, Morris stressed the lending library  was a community effort.  “We wanted to get as many people involved as we could.”

Hats off to the Housing Authority Board and Chairman Morris, and members Kimberly Richo, Colleen Espersen, Cassandra Floyd, and Elaine Roberts for this nice addition to our community.

Peggy, I think you just go there and add the books recognizing there is limited space.
