City mourns the passing of retired Police Detective Ronald Odell Brizele.

With respect and sadness the Fernandina Beach Police Department is reporting the death of former police detective Ronald Odell Brizele, 62 years of age.

A 1972 graduate of Fernandina Beach High School, Brizele served in the United States Army from 1973 through 1977. He was hired by the police department on March 25, 1985 and retired from full-time employment on July 30, 2010.

During his career with the FBPD he served in patrol operations, investigative services, and as a School Resource Officer. He was a certified hostage negotiator, and was the 1997 Police Officer of the Year.

Ron was characterized by coworkers as “very well-liked and respected throughout the community and he was dedicated to the youth of our island.” He routinely volunteered hours of time to the Police Athletic League program and was the original PAL program coordinator. He was dedicated to the law enforcement profession and was known to go the extra mile for anyone in need of help.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but will be announced as soon as they are available.

Good afternoon, my name is Lance Gerard. I’m a resident/native of New Orleans. I recently found a old officer baton with the trophy label attached reading “ Fernandina BCH Officer Of The Year 1997 Ron Brizzle”. I would love to get this back to his families hands if possible. I think it’s worth more to them than to me. Contact me 5042702166 and [email protected]. Thanks talk to you guys soon.
