Fernandina Beach police have blocked off N. 2nd Street from Alachua to the port as they try to resolve a situation that began at 3:00 a.m. today. Called for assistance by a woman who escaped from a male threatening violence, they have surrounded a property in which the suspect has been holed up since then.

According to an eyewitness report, police have responded with a SWAT team and are prepared to launch tear gas grenades into the building, located between Broome and Calhoun Streets.  An ambulance is on the scene, and based upon a complaint filed by the suspect’s girlfriend a warrant has been issued to Baker Act the suspect.

Neighbors reported hearing screams coming from that direction during the early morning hours.
