Enjoy traditional fare of the Greek islands and learn how 19th century
sponge fishermen from the Greek Dodecanese Islands turned a coastal Florida
village into what soon became known as “the sponge capital of the world.”
Dr. Tina Bucuvalas, Curator of Arts & Historical Resources for the City of
Tarpon Springs and noted folklore expert, will describe this unique
community at a dinner sponsored by the Friends of the Fernandina Beach
Library (FOL). This event will be held June 4th from 6 – 8 pm, at Café
Karibo, 27 N 3rd Street, Fernandina Beach.
Dr. Bucuvalas received a Fulbright Scholar Award to research folklife in
Greece while she was working for the Florida Folklife Program from 1996 to
2009. She is currently involved in sustaining Tarpon Springs’ community
culture through public events, workshops, and historic preservation.
Café Karibo chef Essam Kabil is preparing a full dinner menu featuring the
flavors of the Dodecanese Islands. Tickets for dinner and the program are
$35 and may be purchased at the Library on 4th Street. All proceeds benefit
the FOL campaign to furnish the new library.
