Residents of Nassau County and its municipalities must have registered to vote by close of business on Monday, October 6, 2014, to be eligible to vote in the November 4 General Election.  Municipal elections for the city of Fernandina Beach and the towns of Callahan and Hilliard coincide with the general election.

As of October 4, 2014, there are 55,657 registered voters in Nassau County:  14,450 Democrat; 30,000 Republican; and 11,207 “Other.”   As the author Louis L’Amour observed, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. One who does not vote has no right to complain.”

Residents may register to vote by completing an application form, available at either of the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections offices or online at http://www.votenassau.com/Voter-Registration/Voter-Registration-Application.aspx.   If you are a first time Florida voter, you must print, sign and deliver your application to the Supervisor of Elections Office.  Because an original signature is required, faxed or emailed applications cannot be processed.

According to the Supervisor of Elections website, if you have never voted in Florida, and you have not been issued a Florida driver’s license, Florida identification card, or Social Security number, you will be required to provide additional identification prior to voting the first time. To ensure that you will not have problems when you go to vote, you should provide a copy of the required identification listed below.

You may provide a copy of one of the following photo identifications (ID) that includes your name and picture:

U.S. Passport Military ID
Debit/Credit Card Student ID
Public Assistance ID Neighborhood Association ID
Retirement Center ID

Or, you may provide a copy of one of the following documents that contains your name and current residence address:

Utility Bill
Bank Statement
Government Check
Paycheck
Other Government Document

Or, if you are one of the following persons, you are exempt from having to provide a copy of an ID at this time. These exemptions are:

  • Persons 65 years of age or older
  • Persons with a temporary or permanent physical disability
  • Members of the active uniformed service or merchant marine who, by reason of such active duty, are absent from the county
  • Spouse or dependent of an active uniformed service member or merchant marine who, by reason of the active duty or service of the member, is absent from the county
  • Persons currently residing outside the U.S. who are eligible to vote in Florida

Note:  All voters are required to provide ID containing photo and signature at the time of voting in the polling place.  Without proper identification, a voter can only vote a provisional ballot.
