I say continue with those proclamations. That public recognition of community contributors and community events is one of the things that separates a small, friendly town like Fernandina Beach from an impersonal urban area.

Let us also Recognize and Remember (Monument at end of Centre Street)

Monument was put together and dedicated by those who were “blood of shrimp industry” and it is to them we owe our due respect. Shrimper Robert Lannon, now deceased made this monument possible; and most of these dedicated shrimpers are now deceased.
After being a part of festival serving “fruit of our labors” (perhaps 40 years longer than any other food vender) we regret that due to several reasons of management by Festival Committee, one of which our location at “Front & Centre” Streets location was taken away and given to “sports fishermen”.
Shrimpers were relocated to back of food booth area, Question, what does sports fishermen have to do with promotion of commercial shrimp industry?
We have dedicated over 40 years of promoting our industry to harvesting (trawling) marketing, protecting natural resources; looking out for the welfare of all those in our industry. the door is not closed…not ever.
Village Fest will be held at Mayport May 10 and 11 celebrating National Shrimp Day with Blessing of Fleet and Shrimp Boat Races. Real celebration of Shrimp Industry. Wild Caught Shrimp and Fish will be served. Lots of Children’s activities. Free parking and shuttle service both days

It costs so little to say thank you, yet the benefits are so rewarding.
