Local author blends historic images with modern day in new book

Rob HicksNew from Arcadia Publishing’s Then & Now series is Amelia Island by local author and historian Rob Hicks. The series takes readers on a before and after journey through time. Over 200 side-by-side images of the past and present give readers a revealing look at the evolution of Amelia Island.

“I made great effort to take all the ‘now’ pictures from the same spot I assumed the ‘then’ pictures were taken,” explains Hicks. “With such an old and well-preserved town, one can make some pretty neat comparisons about how time has changed Amelia Island.”

The island, once known for pirates and smugglers, developed into a hub for the shipping industry and later for tourism. “Throughout that transformation, local residents worked hard to keep the small-town feel, natural surroundings, and historic relevance intact” said Hicks.

Highlights of Title include:
• Comparisons of satellite images over time highlighting the growth and development of the island
• Rare historic images that many locals have not seen before
• Accounts of the years following Amelia Island’s Golden Age, looking into the mid 20th century
