Airport Trees Cutting Florida Department of Transportation Cropped
Crane Island is shown to the left on this aerial of the City of Fernandina Beach Airport. This photo was used in 2008 by the Florida Department of Transportation for a tree survey (red dots).

According to an article published in the Jacksonville Business Journal
“transportation and business magnate who owns aviation, shipping and automobile operations around the globe has purchased Crane Island, near Amelia Island, for $9.9 million.”

The new owner is  Saad Wallan  a familiar name in the Fernandina aviation community.  Wallan is president of the Soverign Corporation.  In 2009, Soverign constructed two corporate airplane hangers at the City of Fernandina Beach airport.

It will be interesting to know what Mr. Wallan’s plans for the island are. County approved a PUD that would permit up to 169 homes to be built on the island. It should be noted that the northern part of the island (where most of the red dots are concentrated) is owned by the Florida Inland Navigation District and is being used as a spoils site for dredged material from the intracostal waterway and other sites.

Just wondering. Who sold it to them? Who was the owner of record?

Maybe Mr. Wallan will leave Crane Island undeveloped and help maintain the ambiance of Amelia Island.
