On a beautiful, sunlit October morning on October 28, 2013, yet one more oversized truck got caught up in Fernandina Beach’s downtown historic district.  Literally.  In swerving to miss a postal delivery truck the driver of a Central Transport truck got tangled up with a low hanging limb of an old tree on one of the city’s most historic residential streets:  North 6th Street.

Tree limb rests between cab and trailer, pinning the truck in place.

This is only the most recent incident involving oversized vehicles getting lost on their way to or from the Port and the Central Business District.  Despite signs that clearly say “No Trucks,” those drivers unfamiliar with the area sometimes rely more on GPS navigation than on signs to find their way.   Meanwhile, the shady canopy of live oaks, pecans and magnolias bear the scars of destruction caused by the drivers’ mistakes.

The city’s Streets Department cleans up the aftermath as best as it can, and the City Police Department does its best to make sure that the driver does not repeat the mistake.
