Atlantic Ave Recreation Center opens Fitness Center

Submitted by Susan Hardee StegerDSC01479

The Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center now has a fitness center thanks to the acquisition of a large quantity of used workout equipment from a local company that is no longer in business.  For the bargain price of $8,000 the equipment was purchased.  The fitness center opened June 17, and since that time $3,063 has been collected from 823 individuals who  use the facility.  The equipment includes Precor treadmills and elliptical machines, Star Trac bikes, Hammer Strength plate loaded fitness machines, and Magnum Fitness Biangular Series machines.

Atlantic Avenue walkers and bikers are seen making a quick stop to continue their exercise routines.  Individuals residing in neighborhoods close to the facility love the convenience.  Windows line much of the room brightening up the atmosphere and allowing for a distant view of the marsh, and a pleasant view of the magnificent oak tree adjacent to the building.  Another  benefit on hot summer days is the plentiful  cool air circulating throughout the facility.

The good news, is that the price is right!  For a Fernandina resident the cost is $3 a day, or $25 a month.  Those living in the unincorporated areas pay $5 a day or $31 a month. Passes are also available for those interested in a longer term commitment.   City residents are charged $120/six (6) months,  and Non-City residents are charged $150.  For one year passes, City residents are charged $180, and $225 for Non-City. On October 1, a new package fee structure will take place for those interested in using the pool and fitness center.
