Jim Schoettler, suburban writer for the Florida Times Union reports that Sal “Rocky” Cenicola at age 53,  “beat a 34-year-old jail guard and will be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records.” (Click here for Florida Times Union article.) The fight was held at the Peck Center in Fernandina Beach on Saturday night.

Cenicola told Fernandina Observer, reporter at large Anne H. Oman (Click here for previous article)  that:

“[He is] making a comeback exactly 25 years and 65 days later –a world record for a comeback fight in professional boxing.”“I retired on February 6, 1988, at the age of 28,” says Mr. Cenicola.  “I’m making a comeback exactly 25 years and 65 days later –a world record for a comeback fight in professional boxing.”

Luke Daniel, Fernandina native attended the match with his brother former boxer Mutt Daniel.   “Mutt and I had a great time! It was an amazing crowd when you consider ‘Guns N’ Hoses‘ was going on at the same time in Jacksonville.  Great crowd, and good fighters.”  According to Daniel, Nate Campbell former lightweight from Jacksonville and  Jose Ribalta, also attended the event.  Ribalta once fought Mutt Daniel and Mike Tyson.”

The Fernandina Observer extends its congratulations to Sal “Rocky” Cenicola.  Proceeds from the Peck Center event “will benefit the Queen of Hearts Foundation, a non-profit based in Palm Bay, Florida, that helps get treatment for children with cerebral palsy and other diseases.”
