Following the death of Granville “Doc” Burgess in December 2012, Florida Governor Rick Scott charged the Fourth Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission to solicit applications from attorneys interested in serving as Nassau County judge for the remainder of Burgess’ term.  According to a December 19, 2012 Florida Bar press release, “Applicants must be able to fulfill the Constitutional qualifications before assuming the office of County Court Judge, which require the applicants to be members of The Florida Bar for the last five years, residents of Nassau County and registered voters of the State of Florida.“

As of the January 18, 2013 application deadline, the following individuals have submitted applications:

From Fernandina Beach:

  • Janet A. Carver
  • John J. Cascone
  • Clyde W. Davis
  • Wesley R. Poole

From Hilliard:

  • Steven M. Fahlgren

From Jacksonville:

  • Angela D. Matthews Gale
  • Eric C. Roberson

From Lake Butler:

  • Thomas D. Webb

From Ponte Vedra Beach:

  • Gary F. Easom

From Yulee:

  • David A. Hallman
  • Thomas E. Townsend, Jr.

Interviews of applicants will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013. The interviews will be held in the Grand Jury Room at the Judicial Annex in Nassau County, 76347 Veterans Way, Yulee, Florida and are open to the public.

The Judicial Nominating Commission is seeking comments on the qualifications of the applicants from the public, the bench and the Florida Bar.  Such written comments should be directed to:

Henry G. “Chip” Bachara, Chair

Fourth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission

Bachara Construction Law Group

One Independent Drive, Suite 1800

Jacksonville, FL 32202

The written comments must be received by Tuesday, January 29, to be considered by the Commission.  Apparently, comments must be sent in writing and not electronically because no email address is available.

Following interviews and deliberations (closed to the public), the Commission will narrow the field and send their top candidates to the Governor’s Office.  From point of receipt of the short list, the governor has 60 days to fill the vacant position.

The successful applicant will serve until 2014, when the next election for a full 6-year term will take place.
