As a 15 year old Fernandina Beach High School student, John C. “Charlie” Hutchins began tinkering with his Mother’s 35 mm Kodak Pony camera.  Eventually his older sister’s outdoor playhouse became his dark room and throughout his high school years he was rarely seen without a camera around his neck.  Mentors such as Ray Caldwell, former publisher of the News Leader, Tom Davis, local professional photographer, and Susan Wolf, a high school art teacher encouraged him along the way.

It was Wolf who suggested Hutchins enter his “Net Mender” photo in a Miami  student art show, sponsored by Scholastic Weekly. This photo, taken at age 15 won first place.

A short time later the wife of Fernandinian Tom Goolsby who was employed by Scholastic Weekly brought a copy of Weekly Reader to Hutchins showing the “Net Mender” had won a Weekly Reader national award.

The photo taken of John Gallaway was a familiar scene in Fernandina during the 50’s and  60’s, and according to Hutchins, it was this photo “that started it all” and helped launch his career in photography.   Thank you Charlie for sharing it with us.

Editor’s Note: John C. “Charlie” Hutchins has been a freelance photographer for more than 30 years and is published in periodicals like Esquire and Skin Diver Magazines, annual reports and promotional brochures. Formerly a full-time faculty member at Florida Institute of Technology, Charlie taught photography, specializing in underwater photography in the Oceanographic Technology program. He also did a turn as a creative director for an advertising agency specializing in real-estate, resort, and financial clients. Currently he resides in North Carolina working on Fine Art Prints and Photography Lessons and Adventures.  www.jchutchins.com
