Nassau County Veterans and flags on Amelia

Submitted by Gerry Clare

Yesterday, volunteers from Nassau County Veterans groups took down more than 70 flags at the Shave bridge eastern entrance to Amelia Island.  According to Bob Clifton (Marine Corps League), this display has been put up since around 1996 and was an effort promoted by Bill Grace (Vietnam Veterans) among others.

This is the first time the flags have been flying on Labor Day.  Normally they are put up on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veteran’s Day.  Besides the prominent American Flag, there are flags representing every branch of the armed services, each state and U.S. territory, and many veterans’ groups of Nassau County.  Also added recently were flags for our firefighters and police.

In the beginning the flags were set up on the west side of the bridge, but were later moved to the east side, where we can now look forward to seeing them proudly waving to honor our Nassau County heroes.
