Tree Delivers Crushing Blow

Special to the Observer

A local couple narrowly escaped injury Sunday night when a tree came crashing into their residence on Amelia Road. A co-owner of the property, who preferred not to be identified, said the two were watching TV and were in the front of the house when the tree fell about 9:30 p.m. A tree surgeon who was surveying the scene Monday morning estimated that the Loblolly Pine was about 65 to 70 feet tall.

“One person was in the living room and one was in the bedroom. They were very lucky,” the owner said. The couple are now staying with relatives.

The owner said the house was about 75 years old and weathered Hurricane Dora in 1964, but it probably won’t survive Beryl — it will probably be demolished because of the extensive damage.
