If someone you know and love suffers from a mental health concern, its affects can take a toll on both the patient and those who care for them. It can be a heavy burden. However, it’s important to keep things in perspective and remember that one’s mental health is a big component of one’s overall well-being. It’s also important to know that many mental illnesses are common and treatable.

May is designated Mental Health Month and this year’s theme is Risky Business- a call to educate ourselves and others about habits and behaviors that MAY increase the risk of developing or exacerbating mental illnesses. It’s also a call to recognize certain behaviors like compulsive sex, recreational drug usage, obsessive behaviors, including excessive spending and internet habits and others which could be signs of mental health illnesses. The ability to recognize these problem behaviors can be helpful in disrupting someone’s potential spiral towards a path of full blown crisis.

Mental Health Month was started 68 years ago by the national organization, Mental Health America (MHA), to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone.

John Bowls, Health Services Manager for Barnabas, wants to share the message that “Mental illnesses are common and treatable, and help is available. We need to speak up early—and in real, relatable terms so that people do not feel isolated and alone. Sharing is the key to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and to showing others that they are not alone in their feelings and their symptoms.”

Barnabas has a licensed Mental Health Counselor on-site to provide one-on-one counseling sessions to adults who receive their medical and crisis assistance services. Additionally, Barnabas’ Women’s Health Initiative in Nassau (WHIN) helps women who have been affected by trauma by offering practical life skills that empower them in making better, healthier choices. The project uses peer support groups and alternative therapies such as journaling, art therapy, guided meditation and physical exercise. Both services are free for adults who qualify.
