Volunteers help recyclers unload their vehicles.

Fernandina Beach can chalk up another successful recycling event 2017. According to official figures provided by Jeremiah Glisson, city maintenance director, 807 vehicles visited the recycle site between the hours of 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 22, making this the 2nd largest turnout ever. A breakdown of the expenses & revenues are listed below:

Expenses:
•          $22,376 – disposal of hazardous waste
•          $8,424 – disposal of electronics
•          $458 – disposal of 3.1 tons of tires
•          $100 (approx.) – disposal of approx. 300 gallons of used motor oil
•          $400 – payroll & misc. supplies

Revenues:
•          $200 – Disposal of automotive batteries
•          $400 – disposal of scrap metal
•          NO CHARGE – recycling of curbside items
•          NO CHARGE – disposal of household garbage

This year the city asked recyclers to also bring food contributions for the Barnabas pantry. As a result, approximately 2,000 lbs. of food were collected in donations.

Paints and other toxic materials receive special attention.

Glisson and City Manager Dale Martin gave a special shout out to Fernandina Beach High School student volunteers who joined city staff to work the event.

Recycling is not just a once a year event in Fernandina Beach.  The City of Fernandina Beach contracts its sanitation services with Advanced Disposal for the community’s residential/commercial garbage, recycling, and yard waste pick-up.

The annual recycle event allows residents and businesses to safely dispose of items that fall outside the list of items which are routinely recycled as part of normal curbside trash/recycling pick ups.  City residents and businesses can recycle many items weekly at their curb, as explained below.

For more information or for questions on curbside recycling in the City of Fernandina Beach, visit the city’s website: www.fbfl.us or call Advanced Disposal at (904) 261-7186.

We anticipate this even all year long and are grateful that we live in a City mindful enough to make this part of our annual routine. Many thanks to all who make this happen!
