Compassionate Fernandina partnered with the Wild Amelia Junior Naturalist Program to present a class on “Compassion and Butterflies” at The Book Loft on Saturday, April 15. Children created cards of kindness to give to someone in their lives as an expression of gratitude. Some chose teachers, some chose a person in the community who had been especially helpful, some chose a person who is sad or struggling, and some chose family. Children discussed the ways in which we are all unique and beautiful, just like our butterflies, and they learned ways to show compassion to the various kinds of butterflies who live here.

Thanks to the kindness of Reflections of Nature, each child received a milkweed plant to grow in their own yards to attract monarchs and other butterflies. The kindness we all show in big and small ways has such a ripple effect on our families, our communities, and our world.

Compassionate Fernandina is an evolving organization of people who are committed to a vision of this community being one in which we treat everyone and the Earth with kindness, dignity and respect. Our inspiration for initiating this organization was learning about the Charter for Compassion, created by Karen Armstrong and a number of world religious leaders in 2008.

We seek to inspire, grow and celebrate compassion in Fernandina Beach and beyond. Our mission is to widen the circle of compassion through practical, intentional actions. We reach out to other individuals and organizations in the community and invite them to join in partnership with Compassionate Fernandina. Two collaborative projects have been started this year as we work on practical, intentional activities. One is a Beautification landscaping project along South 11 th Street, being undertaken with the Northeast Florida Community Action Agency. The other project has been completed in conjunction with the Wild Amelia/Junior Naturalist Program.

Compassionate Fernandina

Treat everyone as we wish to be treated— with kindness and dignity. This universal, ageless value, sometimes called The Golden Rule, lies at the heart of faiths and philosophies worldwide and transcends our differences.

We are neighbors committed to treating others as we wish to be treated. We seek to inspire, grow and celebrate compassion in Fernandina Beach and beyond.

We join people of all faiths and traditions around the world in affirming the Charter for Compassion. Join us on this rewarding journey.

This story made me happy. I had been noticing more Monarchs than usual in my yard recently.
