My name is Adam Salzburg, district 3 commissioner of the Ocean Highway and Port Authority. Recently I was appointed chairman of the board, and as such I feel it is important to share information with you regarding what is going on with your board, and at your port.

As part of our priority to bring the Port Authority to everyone in the county, we held our March meeting in the City of Fernandina Beach Commission Chambers on March 15th. Future outreach meetings will be held on May 10th at 6 pm in Hilliard, and August 9th in Callahan at 6 pm.

The Port Authority believes that in order to make the port more effective, a Port Authority Director should be hired. As such, the board voted at the March meeting to explore hiring a Port Authority Director. We are forming a citizen committee to come up with roles, responsibilities, and an overall job description for the position. In addition to traditional port authority director responsibilities, this position will require extensive economic development experience.

We also voted to form another citizen committee to explore our entire debt and come up with ways to free up capital in order to facilitate projects that are economically beneficial. There are many citizens throughout our county with a tremendous knowledge of economics. We are hoping to tap into some of that knowledge to generate ideas for ways to restructure our debt.

Port Quick Fact:

Last month, 18,750 tons of cargo crossed the docks of your port. Throughout the entire month of February, there were 724 truck trips to the port. That is an average of 36 trucks per working day.

Our next meeting is scheduled for April 12th at 6 pm in the Commission Chambers at the James Page Government Complex in Yulee.
