We have received several questions regarding two State Constitutional Amendments
that will be on the November 8th ballot. Both of these amendments pertain to
property taxation and therefore I feel inclined to give my recommendation on each.

Amendment 3 – Tax Exemption for Totally and Permanently Disabled First Responders.

This amendment will provide tax relief for first responders who have been totally and permanently disabled as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty. This is similar to the already existing law which allows military men and women who have total and permanent service connected disabilities to be exempt from paying property taxes. I believe this amendment is a good one for our first responders who have been
injured while serving and protecting us.

Amendment 5 – Homestead Tax Exemption for Certain Senior, Low-Income, Long Term
Residents.

Currently in the state of Florida, Seniors 65 years and older who have lived in their home for more than 25 years, who make an annual salary below the maximum requirement set by the state annually, and who have a market value less than $250,000, are allowed an additional total exemption of property taxes. With potential increases in property values, a qualified recipient of the exemption could lose the benefit if their market value increases above $250,000. The amendment on this year’s ballot cleans up the language. This would allow the recipient to keep their already existing exemption even if the value increases above $250,000.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact our office with any questions.
