Congratulations to all the winning Candidates, especially Dr.Burns, who ran on Qualifications and important issues facing our School System. I think it’s a testament to the Electorate of Nassau County, by not being swayed by wedge issues, and slanderous statements by her opponents Campaign. By far the Biggest Winners are the Children of Nassau County, and our Educators in the System. Congratulations all.

Don’t forget Steven – Cheryl James is on the ballot in November…wonder if she will drop out…. if she has any decency about herself she will call Vicki Cannon today and withdraw.

Hopefully other candidates in the future can learn from this. I’ve lived all over Florida plus in Georgia and Alabama. Nassau County is where I’ve spent most of my adult life so I still keep up with things (thanks to this great website). But Nassau has the dirtiest politics of any place I’ve ever lived. When I lived in Florida I always voted for Burns AND for Adkins in their respective races. This was the first time they ever ran against each other. Both had strong experience serving on the school board, so really they cancelled each other out in that area. It was also the first time Adkins has ever really been tested by a strong opponent. When the going gets tough — as it did for both of these candidates — the campaigns allow us the opportunity to have a window into their character. The Muslim card, the bathroom politics, the nasty hateful rhetoric, vile campaigning, mean-spiritedness, lies, disgusting advertising, election tactics, and divisiveness I saw from a candidate I once avidly supported and thought highly of really disappointed me. Made my heart sink to my gut to look into that character “window” that she opened up widely for all of us to see. I felt so personally disappointed and let down. She is an intelligent lady so I hope that if she ever runs for anything again, she will take a higher path. One can be passionate about the work — or one can play “hate politics”. But you realy can’t do both. You have to pick one.

On the other hand, Dr. Burns also let us look into her window and what we saw was strong character, experience in not only being a school board member but in also being an educator, espousing fairness, good judgement, and seeing the best in people.

Dr. Burns’ strongest quality (in my humble opinion) was her VERY visible passion for young people. You can really tell that being involved in educating young people brings true joy to her heart. To her, I don’t think she sees this as a political office as much as a calling. In the end, THAT was the difference. Even if you take away all the Democrats who switched parties, the numbers indicate she STILL would have won.
