Primary Election Day 2016 dawned under clear skies with welcome breezes helping the campaign workers keep the heat and humidity at bay as they waved signs in support of their candidates.

With respect to campaign signs at the polling places: first they were there, then they weren’t. Directives from the city resulted in the removal of all signs that had been placed in the city right-of-ways by eager campaign workers. By mid-morning, polling places had been swept clean, leaving only those campaigns with hardy volunteers to wave signs at voters and passing motorists.

By 11:00 a.m., 2,600 voters had turned out to cast their votes in person today. This figure, when added to mail ballots and early votes, means that almost a quarter of Nassau County registered voters have cast their ballots already.

The most trafficked polling places included Atlantic Rec Center with 349 voters; Callahan County Building with 261; and First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach with 259. Two polling places have so far recorded less than 100 voters: MLK Elm Rec Center and River Road Baptist Church.

Polls remain open until 7:00 p.m. today.
