Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix 2016

raceTwo Glorious Days of Racing for Vintage Racing Cars and Vintage Racing Motorcycles on the Historic “Golden Crown” Course at the original site of the “Golden Crown Prix, 1961-1974, at the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport. The 2016 Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix, sanctioned by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) event will take place over the weekend of March 17-20, 2016, of which Saturday and Sunday are the spectator days at the track.

The event includes Vintage Sports Cars and Vintage Motorcycles from the pre-war era to 1980 racing on the 2.1 mile course laid out over seven turns, two of which are hair pins, four chicanes and even a jump on the racing circuit. Additionally, there will be a Vintage Aircraft display and for those that desire to do so, flights in some of the aircraft will be available. Located on the grounds of the Amelia River Golf Club, adjacent to the race track and with direct viewing of the racing activities, there will be a two day Car and Motorcycle show to see and or participate in, as well. For those of us like me who don’t get enough from the Amelia Concours D’Elegance adding another weekend of classic cars will be great. And these sports cars aren’t just in static displays, they are actually going to be racing. What a thrill.
There’s nothing like the sound of “big iron” Corvettes, Cobras, Mustangs, and Camaro’s
as they accelerate out of the first turn on that first lap. I swear I can feel the ground shake. Plus I understand there is a longer race between late model Porsche racers and Ferrari’s. Should be quite a weekend.
