Armed robbery suspect arrested

Yulee, Fla. – On February 25, 2015 at approximately 2:10 am the Kangaroo Food Store on U.S. Hwy. 1 (Ratliff Road) in Callahan was robbed by a white male armed with a hammer. The suspect made off with $75.00 in cash and five packs of cigarettes after acting in a threatening manner towards the clerk.

The suspect fled the scene in an early model blue / grey Ford F-Series Pick-Up Truck.

During the investigation, it was discovered that a subject matching the description of the suspect (including vehicle) robbed another convenient store in the Commonwealth Road area of Jacksonville.

Information was developed from leads that indicated that the robbery suspect was Charles Edwin Smith II. It was found that Mr. Smith had a felony criminal history (Escape, Sex Crimes, and Financial Crimes) which caused him to be incarcerated by the Florida Department of Corrections. It was further found that the NCSO had an active warrant for the suspect for Failure to Comply with Sexual Offender Requirements.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Office CID Detectives contacted the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force in Jacksonville and requested that an attempt be made to locate Charles Smith on the Nassau Warrant for Failure to Comply with Sexual Offender Requirements.

On 02/27/2014 Charles Edwin Smith II was located and detained by the United States Marshal Service in the area of State Street in Downtown Jacksonville.

Mr. Smith was secured without incident and the Marshals transported him to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office where he was interviewed.

Mr. Smith confessed to committing the above mentioned robbery and was arrested on the active Failure to Comply warrant and for Armed Robbery.

Nassau County Deputies are working with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to provide them with the information on their case.
