The Nassau County Sheriff’s office volunteered with the Greater Nassau Chamber of Commerce today along with students from West Nassau and others to fit and hand out 400 helmets and backpacks. Counting yesterday’s handouts the total came to 717, according to Faye Overstreet, who managed the operation.
She and Ken Overstreet, treasurer of the chamber, demonstrated the proper fitting of the helmuts on John Ruiz, Superintendent of Schools for Nassau County and on a student while others watched at Hilliard Elementary school today.
This reporter and her husband Tom, who volunteer for the sheriff’s office enjoyed the excitement of the children served as they got shiny new helmets worth $45 to $50, donated through grants from FDOT and other commercial corporations such as Kohl’s.
This program was a huge success, according to the organizers and children.

A great program to improve safety for our kids. Thanks to all who made it happen.
