Around town and moving days

This past weekend was a busy one starting downtown with Sounds on Centre Street. The Honey Badgers played Beatles tunes to a large and appreciative crowd Friday night. The nice weather brought lots of residents and tourists alike including the Long family (above) from Indianapolis,

Where did the books go?

TS - 8

The Friends of the Library Book Sale finished up on Saturday with President, Bill Flynn, pictured, declaring it a success. Over 10,000 books had been sold as of Saturday morning and the afternoon had volunteers clearing away the remaining books. According to Bill, the books that do not sell after three sales are sorted out to be donated to non-profit groups like Barnabas and Goodwill. The rest of the books , tables and equipment are stored downstairs in the Peck Gymn while some borrowed tables are returned to their owners. This is a huge undertaking and from this reporter’s perspective, a very organized operation.
Where is Books Plus?

Maggie DeVries was on hand Saturday to greet customers at her new location at 1743 South Eighth Street next to Nassau Diamonds. Coffee and cookies and a large attractive space with onsite parking made for a new look. Of course, all the usual sections of Books Plus are still there, but now there is also a separate room for a used books exchange. We wish her continued success.

Where is Milo?

TS - Group
You may have noticed that Milo’s Shoe Repair at 1617 South Eighth Street has been undergoing some activity lately. Yes, Milo Bajevic is back from Romania and near Cleveland, Ohio, where he has been over the past few years. In Ohio he specialized in orthopedic shoe repairs and creations as well as custom leather craft along with shoe repairs. But, he was not excited about the cold Ohio winters and has returned to his old building to work his magic once again. When the outside work is finished and the phone hooked up, he will be fully operational and can be reached at 904-321-7747. Meantime you can stop by and get him to take on your leather challenges. Recently he even worked on restoring some leather antiques.

Where are Townies and U-Haul-Self Storage?

TS - Group 2

You have probably noticed that Townies moved from South Eighth Street to the old Kentucky Fried Chicken location and U-Haul is now across the street where Staples used to be.

TS - 1 CroppsedThere is certainly a lot of moving going on and my last stop was today, Monday, watching the Timesteppers of the local Bean School of Dance moving to the music at the YMCA. The Silver Sneakers Class was watching the demonstration after their class and, yes, your roving reporter moves to the slower exercises of the latter class.

Where is Ed Boner?

TS - 3

Ed’s realty business is moving from the historic downtown back to where it used to be on South Eighth Street. Looks like our mayor is going to be driving to the coffee shops, not walking.
