Sustainable Fernandina will host its second town hall meeting on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 6:00pm in the Peck Center Auditorium. The meeting, entitled “Sustainability… What does it mean to you?” is part of a public outreach effort to engage the community and discover how the City can become a more sustainable place for its residents to live, work,
and play.
At its first Town Hall meeting, in April, several ideas and issues
were discussed including: better outreach and education on the value of trees
within our community, use of photovoltaic energy, forming partnerships with
local business owners to encourage sustainable practices, and investigating
ways to enhance our current garbage and recycling efforts at our beach areas.
The Sustainable Fernandina committee is already working on ways to addresses
the identified issues and is still looking for more input from the community
on what the City sustainable initiatives should be tackled next.
Sustainable Fernandina is a group of City employees and citizens that is
committed to discovering and promoting ways to conserve resources, reduce
energy costs, decrease waste, protect and strengthen the local economy and
save money throughout the City of Fernandina Beach’s governmental operations.
From major planning projects, to how we perform daily tasks and manage
facilities, Sustainable Fernandina and the City of Fernandina Beach are
working to integrate sustainable practices into how we function and serve the
community.
